Course contents

A PLURILINGUAL LEXICON OF CULTURAL HERITAGE: CORPUS, ANALYSIS AND APPLICATIONS

Professors Ana Pano Alamán, Monica Perotto, Monica Turci and Valeria Zotti

Seminar objectives:

  • illustrate the theoretical approaches connected to the analysis of the lexicon of art and cultural heritage, from an interdisciplinary perspective;
  • provide students with digital humanities methods and tools, in order to create, annotate, and analyse a wide variety of specialised texts within the art and cultural heritage domains.

Students will acquire transversal theoretical and professional skills in the fields of lexicography, the publishing sector, specialised translation, and communication.

The seminar begins with an introduction to the concept of Cultural Heritage, in relation to discursive practices and vocabulary, with a particular regard to the language of art and cultural heritage in English, French, Spanish and Russian.

The terminology and linguistic peculiarities of specialised texts will be analyzed through corpora (comparable and parallel) and with digital humanities tools.

The seminar ends with a practical workshop, which includes the following activities (chosen by the student): the drafting of brochures, the translation of a promotional text, the organization of a communication event, the drafting and / or management of a website or a social media profile, or the organization of dissemination events.

The seminar is divided into three parts:

PART 1: Introduction to the concept of Cultural Heritage in relation to lexicon and discursive practices / The language of art between common language and language for special purposes / The lexicon of cultural heritage in a multilingual and interdisciplinary perspective / Traditional and digital text types: artistic and technical manuals, reportages, travel books, tourist guides, promotional brochures, blogs, websites, social media.
PART 2: Introduction to the use of software for corpora exploration and linguistic data analysis (e.g. Sketch Engine) / Creation and analysis of comparable and parallel corpora / Study of lexicon and terminology through semantic annotation of texts / Analysis of existing translations and / or practice of translation.
PART 3: Workshop on linguistic and digital humanities methods applied to the field of cultural heritage promotion and to the tourism sector / Design of practical dissemination activities: preparation of brochures, organization of events, preparation of traditional and digital informative texts, management of social media profiles for dissemination and promotion of the artistic heritage.
