Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student should know the main processes of political-institutional and socio-economic transformation occurring in Europe and outside Europe from the end of 800 to the Seventies of the 900. The student will also be able to know the guidelines of international politics, in particular in relation to the World Wars, Cold War and decolonization processes.

Course contents

The course will be based on the analysis of XIX and XX centuries history. The course will focus on social and political transformation in Europe during the XIX century since the unification of Italy and Germany. Then, the course will analyse the First World War and the totalitarian political systems during the Twenties and Thirties. The last part of the course will concentrate on the second post-war period, with particular attention on Cold War, transformation in European political systems and the development of Italian republican democracy.

Teaching methods

Teaching methods are basically founded on frontal lectures taught in presence (60 hours). Review sessions and group exercises are also planned. Students will be able to follow the lessons of the entire course in classroom, unless there is a change in the pandemic situation. Students unable to attend lessons in class will be able to follow them  remotely on MS TEAMS.

Assessment methods

Students attending the course

- Two short written examinations will be held during the classes in order to understand how familiar the students have become with the arguments of the course. The questions will be based on the lessons of the teacher and on the books in the institutional part of the syllabus.

Students who have been attending the written examinations will have to undergo a spoken exam at the end of the course. The final spoken exam should be attended on the institutional and monographic part in order to demonstrate how confident the students are with the analysis of particular problems and events of contemporary history.

The final evaluation will be given as an average between the written and the spoken proofs.

Students not attending the course

Students non attending the course should take an exam on the institutional and monographic part in order to demonstrate how confident they are with the analysis of particular problems and events of contemporary history.
