02935 - Laboratory (Lab4)

Academic Year 2021/2022

Learning outcomes

The target of the workshop is to reinforce and develop transversal skills through the practical application of the theoretical framework acquired in different classes. The student will then be able to collect, organize and analyse complex information, as well as to present the results both in writing and orally.

Course contents

The workshop aims to train the students to connect the law, especially constitutional law, with social phenomena and their values. Through the selection of musical texts, it verifies their consistency with the institutional and legal expressions of the corresponding periods, their survival (or abandonment) in changed contexts. It involves interdisciplinary knowledge, encompassing comparative law, music, sociology, political doctrines, philosophy and linguistics.

Readings/Bibliography

No textbook will be used nor required. The professor will recommend in class any useful material.

Teaching methods

The activity will be divided into an introductory lesson on the relationship between music and law, the similarities between the circulation of music and law, the values transmitted by music and constitutions and their coding in musical and legal texts, highlighting the frequent fractures. Next, the students, in groups of 2-3-4, will carry out the analysis of a genre and/or musical period finding its links with the institutions of the time, and their adequacy, with reference to the legal texts in force or to come. As an example, they  will be able to listen to and analyze: classical music; national anthems; music of socialist societies; European Resistance's music; music of protest (years 60-70); blues; ethnic music and the circulation of African music; songwriters' lyrics; "musical colonialism", etc., depending on the preference of the participants.

Assessment methods

Credits will be assigned on the basis of the passing of the presentation (a report on one of the topics of the workshop, agrred upon by the professor and the students).

The teaching methodology of the workshop requires the attendance and participation to the class. It won't be possible to obtein credits for this activity without class attendance. The workshop will take place in the second term, acoording to a schedule to be determined.

Teaching tools

They will be specified by the professor during the first class.
