Learning outcomes

The student - knows the strategies, techniques, traditional and state-of-the-art tools and methods used in specialized translation tasks - is able to apply them to the translation of technical and scientific texts from different genres and text types, from Italian into Russian, meeting specific translation briefs and respecting the communicative functions of the source texts - knows the main techniques required for information mining, drafting, editing and revising texts, including the overall quality evaluation of the translated text

Course contents

The course objective is to provide students with the necessary skills to translate real technical-scientific texts from Italian to Russian, approaching specialized texts as professional translators do.

Students will develop their translation skills, their problem solving abilities, enhancing the capability to find adequate documentation, and facing terminological hurdles related to the fields of "Made in Italy" (furniture, fashion and design; food; packaging etc.)

Teaching methods

The course consists of workshop lessons with the active participation of students.

After being introduced to various texts students will translate them individually, and correction and discussion will be a focus during classes.

Course Attendance of at least 70% is mandatory.

Assessment methods

Translation on computers of a text with similar characteristics to those seen during the course.

The text length will be 300 words, and the time available, 2,5 hours.

Grading scale:

30-30L: Excellent level. The candidate possesses excellent translation skills, with a very high level of competence in the target language.

27-29: Above average level. The candidate makes only minor errors, and shows a solid command of the required skills and competences.

24–26: Generally sound level. The candidate displays a number of shortcomings, indicating a reasonable command of the required skills and competences.

21-23: Adequate level. The candidate displays significant shortcomings and only an adequate command of the required skills and competences.

18–20: Minim level. The candidate only meets the minimum level required and shows a minimal command of the required skills and competences.

< 18 Fail: The candidate does not meet the required standard and shows a wholly inadequate command of the required skills and competences.

The overall mark of the integrated course “Specialized Translation Between Russian and Italian” will be the average between the marks obtained for course modules in “Specialized Translation from Russian into Italian” and “Specialized Translation from Italian into Russian”.
