Learning outcomes

The Psychiatry course trains students to recognize the main mental disorders and to set up an appropriate therapeutic project. In particular, at the end of the course, the student knows the fundamentals of the clinical interview, psychopathology and the main psychiatric disorders encountered in the practice of medicine, both in the hospital and outpatient settings. He has acquired knowledge on the relationships between internal or surgical pathologies and mental disorders, on psychosomatic medicine and on the problems related to consultation and connection psychiatry. He is able to diagnose a mental disorder and has a basic knowledge of the various specialist areas of psychiatry, including drug-toxic-addiction psychiatry, psychogeriatrics, adolescent psychiatry, eating disorders. From the point of view of treatment he is able to establish a correct doctor-patient relationship and to use psychotropic drugs in a competent way, and knows the introductory elements of psychodynamic psychiatry. In addition, the student has acquired knowledge of the legislation of psychiatric interest and the organization of psychiatric assistance in Italy in order to be able to collaborate with local and hospital specialist services. Finally, the student knows the biopsychosocial model applied to mental disorders and the main psychosocial and rehabilitative treatments.

Teaching methods

Lectures with clinical case discussion.

Assessment methods

Oral exam on the contents of the program carried out in class and present in the psychiatry manual indicated in the bibliography. The purpose of the test is to ascertain the student's ability to apply their knowledge and to perform the necessary logical-deductive connections in order to to recognize psychopathological symptoms and signs, frame mental disorders and set up a treatment plan or collaborate in the intervention of the specialist.

Gradation of the final grade:

  • Preparation on a very limited number of topics covered in the course and analytical skills that emerge only with the help of the teacher, expressed in sufficiently correct language: 18-21;
  • Preparation on a limited number of topics dealt with in the course and ability to autonomous analysis only on purely executive matters, expression in correct language: 22-25;
  • Preparation on a large number of topics covered in the course, ability to make independent choices of critical analysis, good command of psychopathological terminology: 26-29;
  • Substantially exhaustive preparation on the topics addressed in the course, ability to make autonomous choices of critical analysis and connection, full mastery of psychopathological terminology and capacity for argumentation and self-reflection: 30-30L.
