Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will acquire theoretical and practicals knowledges on the most common diseases affecting the genital tract in farm animals, both in female and male. Techniques for pregnancy diagnosis, diagnosis and treatment of the most common diseases of embryonic and fetal development, pregnancy, parturition and postpartum period will be the main topics of the course.

Course contents

FEMALE

  • Clinical, instrumental and laboratory pregnancy diagnosis, twins, multiple pregnancies;
  • fetal presentation, position and posture during pregnancy and parturition;
  • obstetric examination;
  • parturition: hygiene, mechanism and induction of parturition;
  • the puerperium: definition, lenght and associated events;
  • abnormalities of fetal fluids and membranes;
  • pregnancy's diseases: disorders of pregnancy of fetal and maternal origin, disorders of gestation lenght : diagnosis and treatment;
  • dystocia, C section, fetotomy;
  • fetal and maternal dystocia: causes and treatment, diseases incidental to parturition : diagnosis and treatment;
  • obstetrical equipment;
  • Puerperal diseases: retention of foetal membranes, endometritis-metritis, metabolic diseases.

MALE

  • Abnormalities of sexual behaviour, diseases of mating ability in livestock: diagnosis and teatment;
  • Diseases of penis, prepuce, testes, scrotum. Testicular termoregulation and “ summer infertility”: diagnosis and treatment;
  • Diseases of the accessory sex glands : diagnosis and treatment.

Teaching methods

Theoretical and practicals classes. For the practical activity the student needs safety device : short and long single use gloves, safety shoes. Presence to the classroom is essential for learning methods for a correct diagnosis and treatment.

Assessment methods

Oral examination. Examination will last from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the preparation level of the student. Questions will be referred to different aspects, and knowledge of the student, as well as the analytical skills, will be evaluated. Final score will be assigned based on the aforementioned criteria.

Exam can be taken in english language.

Teaching tools

In the academic lessons an emphasys will be reserved to the topics of major impact on practice, and the student will learn the other ones from dedicated books or suggested reading material. Teaching material consist of copy of frontal presentation, suggested books and other material supplied by the teacher (video, CD, websites).
