67037 - Physical Chemistry with Laboratory

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Moduli: Elisabetta Venuti (Modulo 1) Riccardo Tarroni (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Rimini
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemistry and Technologies for the Environment and Materials (cod. 8514)

Learning outcomes

The aim of this course is to familiarize the student with laboratory experiments that will illustrate the concepts discussed in the lectures of Physical Chemistry 67035 and with some of the tools and apparatuses used by physical chemists. Students will learn 1)to apply concepts of thermodynamics, kinetics and quantum chemistry in six experiment 2) to work in experiments on their own or in a small group 3) to communicate the results of their work in a written form, learning to write scientific reports in a clear, complete, coincise way.

Course contents

The course consists of class lectures in which the experiments performed in the laboratories are introduced and explained in details, followed by laboratory sessions on the following subjects:

1) Determination of the Ka of weak acids and effects of the ionic strength on the Ka

2) Kinetics of the ethyl acetate hydrolysis, by conductimetric methods

3) Determination of pKa of an acid-base indicator by spectrophotometry

4) Partial miscibility in a ternary system (water,a cetic acid , CCl4)

5) Differential Solution Heat of KNO3

6) Computational chemistry.

Teaching methods

Class lectures and Laboratory

In consideration of the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, the attendance of this training activity requires the performance of all students of modules 1 and 2 in e-learning mode and participation in module 3 of specific training on safety and health in places of study. Information on dates and methods of attendance of module 3 can be consulted in the specific section of the degree program website.

Assessment methods

The final assessment of this course is given on the written laboratory reports. A discussion on the presented results will contribute to the final mark (given as a score out of 30).

Students who fail to hand out their reports (either by mail or as papers) by the beginning of the academic year following the one in which they have performed the experiments, will be given a mark of 17/30 after such a deadline. Also in case there is evidence of plagiarism, if the student has regularly attended the lab, will be given a score of 17/30.

The scores of the present evaluation exams will be weighted by the number of credits (6/16) and will form the total evaluation of course 67037 (the present) and 67035 (Physical Chemistry, 10 credits).

In case of non-delivery OR IN CASE OF EVIDENT PLAGIOUS, a score equal to 17/30 is automatically assigned, which is averaged with the evaluation of Physical Chemistry (course 67035) in the same way described above, to define the overall vote.
