Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the students should know the psalm-poems of the 20th century. Morevoer, they should be able to understand and contextualize a text in German language.

Course contents

The other tradition: Cultural Heritage in the German Psalm-Poems of the 20th century

The course deals with poems of the 20th century in German language which refer to the biblical cultural heritage of the psalms. We’re analysing poems by Georg Trakl, Bertolt Brecht, Karl Wolfskehl, Gertrud Kolmar, Nelly Sachs, Paul Celan, Ingeborg Bachmann, Christine Lavant, Thomas Bernhard, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Peter Huchel, SAID.

The course is held in German language.

Studenti non frequentanti: The program is the same, but it is advisable to contact the teacher.

The selection of the poems will be given by the lecturer.

Moreover, it is recommended to read these books:

- Walter Hinderer (Hrsg.), Geschichte der deutschen Lyrik. Vom Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart, Würzburg, K&N, 2010 (just the part on the XXth century).

- Anna Chiarloni (Hrsg.), La poesia tedesca del novecento, Bari, Laterza, 2009.

- Dieter Burdorf, Einführung in die Gedichtanalyse, Stuttgart/Weimar, Metzler, 1995 (or other edition).

Assessment methods

Students will be required to present a paper.

The oral exam consists of 3 questions; the first question is based on the paper prepared during the course.

Teaching tools

Powerpoint, videos, the contribution of experts on the subject will be used.
