Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students will know the main themes and turning points of the modern age and have acquired notions of methodology and the history of historiography. They will be able to consult the tools needed in gathering historical information (bibliographical repertories, historical atlases, historical journals, etc.) including digital format. They will have a good knowledge of the main themes of history of the modern age, possess precise spatial and temporal coordinates, and be able to assess the importance and novelty of a historian’s work, situating it in the broader cultural framework. They will detect connections, developments, hangovers and transformations in long-lasting historical processes. They will read history texts in at least one language besides Italian and, in speaking, use the appropriate technical terminology.

Course contents

The first part of the course aims to resume the main themes that characterize the modern age, such as

- the birth of the modern state

- wars during the Early Modern Period

- organization of society

- economy followed by the different States

- the religious crisis.

A second part aims to speeks about the methodology and a group of lessons will concern the subject of nobility and court in the early modern Kingdoms.

Attendance is recommended.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of a written exam (two open-ended questions and two closed-answer hour-long on part A) and an oral test (on parts B and C), in different ways for students attending and not attending

The positive outcome of the written test will be valid until the next examination session

The preparation is divided into the following three points, A, B e C:

A. General history of the period 1492-1815

Written test

manual recommended:

Carlo Capra, Storia moderna (1492-1848), Firenze, Le Monnier, 2021 (first edition 2004) (until 1815)

or

Giorgio Spini, Storia moderna, a cura di Marcello Verga, Torino, UTET, 2016

It is advisable to supplement the study of the manual with the use of a historical atlas.

B. Methodology

Oral test

The preparation is carried out on the lecture notes and materials provided during the course + one of the following books:

The study of the methodology manual can be replaced with frequency (tested during the oral exam with a specific question) for at least three of the seminars proposed within the cycle "Fonti e metodologie della ricerca storica" for the a.a. 2021/22 (see the program in the the teacher's website)

C. Monographic course

Oral test

Students will read three texts critically, as they choose from the list included under Testi/Bibliografia

 

The exam will assess the student's command of the material studied in the course. The student will be judged on his ability to summarise and critically discuss topics raised in the course, making use of the exam bibliography and the course tools provided.

The assessment will thus consider the student's:
- knowledge and understanding of the topics covered;
- ability to summarise and analyse themes and concepts;
- familiarity with the terminology associated with the subject and his ability to use it effectively.

Top marks will be awarded to a student displaying an overall understanding of the topics discussed during the lectures, combined with a critical approach to the material and a confident and effective use of the appropriate terminology

Average marks will be awarded to a student who has memorized the main points of the material and is able to summarise them satisfactorily and provide an effective critical commentary, while failing to display a complete command of the appropriate terminology.
