Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student acquires skills and knowledge in the field of socio-historical research concerning fashion and the establishment of its system in connection to the cultural and economic transformations occurred during the twentieth century in Europe. In particular, he has the ability to apply appropriate tools and methodologies to understand the dynamics of the relationship between social changes and fashion.

Course contents

The course will investigate the relationship of between the fashion phenomenon and the main social, economic, political and cultural conditions and transformations occurred in the European society with a specific node to the Italian and France case.

Starting from the development of fashion and society during the Twentieth Century in Europe, the lessons will focus in detail on the history and establishment of fashion Institutions in Italy and France where fashion shows organisation proceeded and the fashion system lay its establishment, in particular after the Second World War.

The following case studies will be presented to the students:

- Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne;

- Ente Nazionale della Moda;

- Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana.

During the lessons a practical activity is planned, in order to critically interpret through the sources analysis the socio-historical development of fashion.
