Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has the theoretical and applicative fundamentals related to the parametric methodologies for modeling virtual products. Furthermore, the student knows the techniques for producing a DMU (Digital Mock-Up) product using a CSG, history-based and feature-oriented parametric modeller and data exchange techniques between CSG and B-Rep models .

Course contents

At the end of the course the student has the theoretical and applicative fundamentals related to the parametric methodologies for modeling virtual products. Furthermore, the student knows the techniques for producing a DMU (Digital Mock-Up) product using a CSG, history-based and feature-oriented parametric modeller and data exchange techniques between CSG and B-Rep models .

The course aims to deepen and develop students' knowledge and skills regarding the theme of design and development of new products. The specialization is functional to form a complete professional figure, with skills on methodologies and tools that enhance and make the development of products more effective and efficient, from their concept to industrialization and production, using tools based on three-dimensional modeling.

More in detail, the course will cover the topics listed below:

(1) Life cycle, product complexity, the importance of simulation, the CIM wheel.
(2) Concurrent Engineering and collaborative design.
(3) Product specifications (project examples).
(4) Physical prototyping.
(5) Virtual prototyping (VR and AR).

Teaching methods

The course includes theoretical lessons and laboratory activities. Laboratory exercises include the performance of some medium / high difficulty exercises in interactive mode. An independent 3D modeling exercise is also assigned and some components are put on the table starting from a real product. The exercise must be carried out independently by a group of 2-3 students who, at the end of the course, must present in virtual mode. The work will be reviewed during exercise hours.

Assessment methods

The final exam consists in the presentation of the self-employment, in the oral interview on the theoretical issues and on the verification of the exercises performed during the course.

Teaching tools

The course involves the use of computers in the computer lab capable of managing interactive 3D graphics.
