34438 - Prosthodontics 4

Academic Year 2019/2020

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in School of Dentistry (cod. 8204)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has acquired the ability to apply the most appropriate prosthetic procedures, as well as to deal with and resolve  complex interdisciplinary clinical cases in relation to prosthetic problems.

Course contents

The course includes the presentation of complex clinical cases for which clinical prosthetic procedures are necessary, in the various specializations of the sector: fixed prosthesis on natural teeth and implants, removable partial prosthesis, total prosthesis and overdenture on natural elements and implants, maxillo prosthesis -Intraoral intraoral. For each of the different types the different clinical procedures necessary for the therapy will be exposed. In particular, for the fixed prosthesis on natural teeth the operative modalities on illustrative clinical cases will be presented: First visit and emergency therapy; Symptom detection; Diagnosis and preliminary treatment plan; Pretreatments: strategic extractions, restorative therapies and possible orthodontic treatment. Execution of partial coronal preparations, use of adhesive anchors: indications and executive techniques. Execution of total coronal preparations: indications and operative techniques; Pretreatments: direct and indirect provisionals. Final prosthetic therapy: re-evaluation of the treatment plan and definitive definitive fingerprinting; Recording of intermaxillary relationships and assembly in the articulator; the final cementation. For the fixed prosthesis on implants, cases will be presented that describe the different prosthetic options: implant-fixed prosthesis on a single element and on multiple elements; implant-prosthetic programming of atrophic patients; overdenture on implants; complete fixed prosthesis on implants and Toronto Bridge; implant-prosthetic options in jaws with dysmorphic anatomies.

For removable, total and partial prosthesis, the execution of clinical cases will also be presented with CAD-CAM technologies. In particular, for the total prosthesis the following clinical procedures on patients will be shown: Prosthetic pretreatment: the pre- and post-extractive total temporary prosthesis; the conditioning of support fabrics; the imprint of edentulous jaws; Realization of the primary model and construction of the individual impression tray; Individual tray edging and mucostatic imprint with frenula functionalization; The vertical dimension of occlusion and rest of the face: theoretical assumptions and detection techniques; The intermaxillary relationships on the horizontal plane; Adaptation of the valleys and techniques for recording the limit movements and the starting therapeutic position; The assembly of the models in the articulator and recording control; Reregistering and reassembling the models in the articulator; Delivery of the prosthesis: indications for use and instructions for home hygiene; Overdentures on natural and artificial root anchors. For the Partial Removable Prosthesis will be shown the clinical procedures for the execution on the patient of the visit, preliminary impression, study models; Parallelometer analysis and treatment plan. Pre-treatment; Preparation of the dental elements, impression and realization of the master model; Recording of intermaxillary relationships and assembly in the articulator; Clinical adaptation, indications for use and instructions for home hygiene of removable partial prosthesis.
