Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, the student understands the reconstruction of landscape changes during times and its determinants, as an important aspect of the history of human settlement .It possesses the basic tools for landscape analysis. The student can understand present Landscape as a ‘palympsest’ where one can read the signs of the interaction between man and the environment over time and is able to recognize the usefulness of the various survey techniques and the most advanced instrumentation in the study and analysis of the ancient landscape, such as historical cartography, remote sensing, geomorphological analysis. It can communicate it in oral form according to the specific rules of the discipline.

Course contents

The course will be divided in two parts. During the first part, the main tools necessaries for reconstructing ancient landscapes (cartography, aerial photography, toponymy, archaeology, GIS, etc.) will be provided. The second part will be devoted to make territorial analysis. The module will be completed by courses about the centuriation, ancient viability and the relationship between geomorphology and settlement. Lessons: San Giovanni in Monte - Monday 15-17 (Aula Seminari), Thursday and Friday 11-13 (Aula Gualandi),  beggining from 2018-10-01

N.B. For a correct exam preparation it is essential to take vision of the principal tools, what the itineraries sources, the texts of the Roman Gromatici, the archaeological repertoires, the topographic cartography, etc.. Teaching methods

The course will base on frontal lessons with the possibility to participate at excavations in the roman towns of Suasa and Ostra and at survey in Misa valley. In May a tour in the Trebbia valley will be organized with the Department of Earth Science of Pavia University

Assessment methods

The assessment of knowledges will consist in an oral examination. The student must prove to know the tools of Landscape archaeology and to be able to read a topographical map. The knowledge of the most important tools is considered the "condicio sine qua non" for the success of the test. The evaluation criteria will fall to the guidelines set by the CdL.
