Learning outcomes

Students will know the main features of stressful events. Moreover, students will have skills to recognize the psychophysiological reactions to the stressors with particular reference to work-related ones. Students will have knowledge concerning the burn-out phenomenon and its psychophysiolocical consequences on workers in healthy organization.

Course contents

ALL STUDENTS:

ATTENTION: Human Information Processing. Attentional systems: arousal and sustained attention; selective attention; executive functions. Neuropsychology of attention: frontal syndrome.

LEARNING: Associative learning (classical/pavlovian and instrumental/operant conditioning). Rewards and punishments. Motivation and learning. Different types of Memory. Amnesia and Alzheimer Type Dementia.

CONSCIOUSNESS AND SLEEP: Wake-sleep alternation and circadian rythms; REM and NREM sleep; functions of sleep and dreaming; the effects of sleep deprivation on brain and behaviour. Sleep disorders.
EMOTION: Biological basis of emotion. Theory of emotion. Subcomponents of emotional responses. Emotional expression and health.
STRESS : The stress response. Acute and chronic stress; physiological and psychological reactions to stress; coping strategies.

ONLY TPALL STUDENTS:

WORK ORGANIZATION: Group interaction, communication networks, leadership styles and work organization.

STRESS AND BURNOUT: Burn-out syndrome: individual and organizational factors and management stategies. Work organization and burn-out prevention strategies.

Teaching methods


Lectures. Classical psychology experiments will be simulated.
At the end of each lesson and topic, the specific references of recommended reading will be recalled.

Assessment methods


The test will be written, with three open-ended question (total time for the examination: one hour).
