Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student is familiar with the laboratory with various methodologies, including histochemistry and immunohistochemistry, for the study of cellular and subcellular  structures at the light microscopy . In particular, the student is able to recognize the morphological aspects that allow the diagnosis of different human tissues by means of their peculiarities.

Course contents

Techniques for studying histologic sections: light and electron microscopy. Techniques and staining methods for the treatment and observation of histologic specimens. The importance of cell shape and size. Strategies for the identification under light microscope of epithelia, exocrine and endocrine glands; Connective tissues (mucous mature, fibrillar period, reticular, elastic, dense, unilocular and multilocular adipose); cartilage (hyaline, fibrous and elastic); bone (lamellar and non-lamellar spongy and compact; tooth: cement and dentin; intramembranous and endochondral bone formation), blood and lymphoid tissue; muscle (smooth, skeletal and cardiac), and nerve tissue (in the central and peripheral nervous system).

Teaching methods

Display of histological slides with indication of identification strategies. Individual exercises to the optical microscope (groups of 30 students) under a teacher's guidance with the aim of providing to each student the opportunity to engage in recognition and interpretetion of microscopic sections.

Assessment methods

The learning assessment will include the examination of slides at light microscopy that is introductory to the oral exam. Students that fail in the examination are not admitted to the oral exam. The oral exam is about Cytology, Histology and Embryology in according the contents published in Histology and Embryology 1 and Histology and Embryology 2 courses. A low mark in one of the three parts precludes the whole exam. The student can choose to keep the mark of examination of slides (valid until December 2019) or to repeat it. In the opinion of the examiners, the final assessment will be the weighed average of the three results.
The online registration to the examination is mandatory.

Teaching tools

Mono and binocular optical microscopes, five head optical microscope for demonstrating histologic details with small groups of students, optical microscope connected to the projector via a computer, power point presentations. Histological slides are available for virtual display with tools and simulation programs at the microscope. In class details for access were given to the students.
