Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide digital knowledge in order to use the computer as a complete architectural design tool. Particular attention will be devoted to the the potential of this tool in accordance with the ideational and management process that characterize the project.

The programme aims to provide extensive knowledge in the fields of BIM (Building Information Modeling).

In particular the student will learn the terminology, definitions and concepts behind the BIM processes with a particular focus on Data Sharing, Design Integration and Team Working.

These concepts will then be resumed in practical exercises focused on the complete learning of a BIM platform: the student will be able to produce a complete architectural and structural model, define parametric objects, extrapolate data and quantities and understand the procedures for multidisciplinary collaboration.

Course contents

Requirements/Prior knowledge

A prior knowledge and understanding of Architectural and Civil design and representation is required to attend with profit this course.

In addition, students should master CAD systems and Basic 3D Modeling techniques.

Fluent spoken and written English is a necessary pre-requisite as well as complete knowledge of the Microfost Windows operating system.

All lectures and tutorials, and all study materials will be in English.

The course will be divided into lessons and practical application directly on the Autodesk Revit software. The main contents of the course are listed below.

  • BIM Tools in Design, Parametric Modeling, attribute and relationships.
  • Design and construction process for BIM
  • BIM Strategies: the Building Project Execution Plan
  • Interoperability
  • Team working strategies and Multidisciplinary collaboration.

    Theory and practical topics with Autodesk Revit.

  • Introduction to Autodesk Revit. Definitions and Terms – Main Interface.
  • Drawings and Modify Tools in Revit.

Teaching methods

Frontal teaching classes with the use of power point slides. Practical lesson inside the computer laboratory.

Assessment methods

Achievements will be assessed by the means of a final exam. During the course will be assigned a theme (an existing architectural project) to be developed with the BIM platform learned during the lessons.

The student will have to produce a set of sheets (ISO A1) containing at least the following drawings:

  • All Plan View 1:100
  • All Elevations 1:100
  • Minimum 2 Section
  • Site Plan 1:200
  • A Room Schedule and a Windows Schedule
  • Perspective, Axonometric View and Rendering (optional)

Additionally, the student must deliver a Cd-rom containing all the Revit models format .RVT and a PDF and DWF printing containing all the sheets.

The student will discuss his work during the final exam and will answer the teacher's questions concerning the work itself and the theoretical concepts explained during the lessons.
