Learning outcomes

The module focuses on the knowledge of the historic factory through methodologies and protocols that mainly concern the transformations of architecture over time for the definition of interpretative and predictive models. The models allow the definition of the residual capacity of construction, a key factor in defining a consolidation project.

The Final Workshop: Design, History and Restoration (C.I.16 CFU, 192 hours) consists of the module/ teaching characteristic of Restoration (6 CFU, 72 hours) as well as a module/ teachings of:

- New technologies for the Survey of Architecture (2 CFU, 24 hours).

- Aesthetic and landscape (2 CFU, 24 hours);

- Rehabilitation of historic buildings (2 CFU, 24 hours);

- Design and active conservation of historic landscapes and open spaces (2 CFU, 24 hours);

- Architectural composition/museography (2 CFU, 24 hours).

The course will be developed in n. 44 hours overall, of which 24 consisting of frontal lessons and 20 of important activities of relief, restoration and critical analysis of monumental historic buildings and will be characterized by a kind of practical-intuitive approach aimed at the dispatching diagnostics of unstable wall structures and in any case close to the theory and science of constructions.

Contents:

- Methodological approach to the study of masonry buildings in reference to the regulatory scene: local mechanisms and global behavior;

- Critical relief and analysis of structural behavior: cognitive phase and evolutionary reconstruction of factory phases of historic buildings;

- Relief, graphic return, analysis of cracking panels and reconstruction of simple and compound damage mechanism

- Elements of masonry mechanic: wall quality and seismic response - qualitative analysis through the model of virtual arches and method of collapse mechanisms - Approach to linear kinematics analysis

- Improvement interventions and localized interventions and reduction of seismic vulnerability

- The building elements of the building organization: arches and vaults, floor structure and roofs (construction techniques, mechanical operation and instability)

- Interaction between structural elements: horizontal and vertical connections

- Premodern anti-seismic consolidation techniques: arch of contrast, buttress, tie beam

- Interventions in roof: armored masonry curbs

- Reinforcement of vaults, arches, lintels and “piattabande”: ductility and fragility of arches and vaults

- Analysis of instability and interventions in the foundation

- Presentation of case studies and examples of intervention

- Didactic visits to historical centers, relief and analysis of ordinary and monumental buildings.

Teaching methods

The course includes frontal lectures that will take place in the classroom, supported by video projections to illustrate the behavior and response of historical masonry to static actions and seismic stresses through the presentation of animations of elementary and composite structures, functional to a practical and intuitive approach of the problem. Part of the illustrations will deal with the mechanics of bows and vaults as a key to the interpretation of the mechanics of masonry in the seismic phase.

Examples and case studies of the critical relief of ordinary and monumental masonry buildings will be illustrated, with particular attention to cracking panels and their interpretation, in order to facilitate the reconstruction of collapse mechanisms and the construction of appropriate models of behavioral analysis.

There are also practical exercises of critical relief for building through visits to historic centers or other sites suitable for the development of the themes envisaged in the program, with particular reference to the analysis of seismic vulnerability. These surveys that will provide discussion opportunities with students to analyze and explore the various topics proposed, from the survey, to the analysis of the constructive and typological characteristics, to the type and quality of the masonry and connection systems, so that it can obtain useful elements for a correct path of knowledge of the building organization in reference to the current technical standards

- Aesthetic and landscape (2 CFU, 24 hours);

- Rehabilitation of historic buildings (2 CFU, 24 hours);

- Design and active conservation of historic landscapes and open spaces (2 CFU, 24 hours);

- Architectural composition/museography (2 CFU, 24 hours).

The Final Workshop: Design, History and Restoration includes the verification of the learning of the contents of all the modules/teachings that make up the Integrated Course and takes place in a single examination test.

The evaluation will be effected on the basis of the laboratory work explained on the final report of the project.


Teaching tools

The frontal lessons will be accompanied by lecture-room video projections, which will be made available to students from time to time. During the exercises, normal manual instrumentation will be used for a traditional type paperback to be returned on a paper and computer basis.
