Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student should have knowledge and skills that extend and strengthen the content of nursing sciences acquired in the first cycle in relation to statistics.
Course contents
The course covers the following topics:
Overview of the research process. Purpose and methods of literature analysis. Identifying and developing the research problem. Presenting the hypothesis.
Statistical concepts and study design. The reasoning behind statistical analysis. Basic concepts of statistical techniques. Description. Inference. Sample selection.
Parametric techniques. Relationships and correlation between variables. Regression. T tests and ANOVA. Time to point analysis.
Nominal and ordinal data. Differences between groups. Comparing expected and observed data.
Measurements and probability. Measurement error. Measurement scales.
Quantitative research. Observational and experimental research. Experimental designs.
In terms of skills, the student will learn the basics of statistical analysis of data from the clinical field and how to read scientific articles from the same field with a critical eye. There will be interactive discussions on the mistakes and strengths of the theses.

Teaching methods
Classroom lessons and hands-on exercises with calculation and statistics tools. Critical reading of scientific articles.
Assessment methods
Written exam (quiz plus possible open-ended question) SOME QUESTIONS MAY HAVE MORE THAN ONE CORRECT ANSWER (2 OUT OF 3), IN THIS CASE EACH OF THEM COUNTS AS 1.5 POINTS. IF 1 CORRECT ANSWER AND 1 WRONG ANSWER ARE MARKED FOR THE SAME QUESTION, THAT ANSWER IS INVALIDATED AND DOES NOT SCORE ANY POINTS. FOR A PERFECT TEST THE GRADE IS 30 WITH HONORS. IN CASE OF MINIMAL ERROR (E.G., OPEN-ENDED QUESTION, IF PRESENT, NOT COMPLETE OR HARD TO READ OR 1 OUT OF 2 CORRECT ANSWERS), THE GRADE IS 30.
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF 10 QUIZZES. 3 POINTS FOR EACH CORRECT ANSWER. AT THE TEACHER'S DISCRETION, OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS MAY BE GRADED BASED ON THEIR ACCURACY.
Teaching tools
Teaching Support Tools
PowerPoint slides will be used as a teaching tool. PDF versions of the slides will be made available to students.
"Students with learning disorders and temporary or permanent disabilities are encouraged to contact the dedicated office (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/it/per-studenti) as early as possible so that appropriate compensatory measures can be agreed upon. Requests must be submitted in advance (15 days before the exam date) to the instructor, who will assess the adequacy of the measures considering the educational objectives."
