Learning outcomes

The theoretical and practical laboratory provides students with the basic skills required to analyse plant and animal remains from archaeological contexts. Through an introduction to Archaeozoology and Archaeobotany, students will acquire the tools needed to investigate past relationships between humans and the environment. The use of comparative reference collections will enable them to learn the fundamental criteria for identifying remains, as well as the main methods used to reconstruct resource exploitation strategies and the economic organisation of ancient societies.

Course contents

The laboratory will introduce the fundamental principles of the archaeological analysis of animal and plant remains, with particular attention to the identification, documentation, and interpretation of bioarchaeological evidence. Activities will include the recognition and analysis of faunal and botanical remains from archaeological contexts through the use of comparative reference collections and the application of the main analytical methods. Particular emphasis will be placed on reconstructing resource exploitation strategies, economic practices, and past relationships between human communities and the environment.
