Learning outcomes

Identify and critically analyze the multiple and often subtle manifestations of stigma, prejudice, and discrimination in healthcare settings, including implicit and explicit forms of racism, sexism, ageism, ableism, and other “isms”, and evaluate their impact on the health and well-being of both patients and healthcare providers. Understand and apply an intersectional perspective to understand how multiple overlapping biases and social identities (e.g., ethnicity, gender, disability) interact to produce complex health inequities, increasing exposure to discrimination or contributing to the marginalization and invisibility of certain patient groups. Develop awareness of how prejudicial attitudes related to chronic illness, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status operate intersectionally and uniquely shape patient perceptions, clinical judgments, and healthcare provision, with significant implications for equity, quality of care, and health outcomes.
