Learning outcomes
The workshops offered by this group provide skills in communication, critical reading, and academic and public-oriented writing. Through participation in workshop activities, students will develop transferable skills in the organisation and critical analysis of complex information, as well as in its subsequent reformulation in oral and written forms. The activities carried out during the workshop enable students to improve the effectiveness of their oral and written communication and to acquire the tools needed to independently and critically assess texts, documents, and information.
Course contents
The "Academic writing" workshop dedicates the first semester of the academic year to source research and the study of typographical standards, with the aim of facilitating and speeding up the preparation and writing of the thesis.
The workshop is open to all, but it complements the course "Institutional History of Republican Italy", featuring, in particular, research exercises focused on the governments of the Italian Republic.
Therefore, participation in this workshop is recommended for students enrolled in the course "Institutional History of Republican Italy."
Attendance at the workshop is mandatory for those intending to submit a thesis in institutional history.
Readings/Bibliography
The course does not include a mandatory bibliography, but reading the classic work by Umberto Eco, How to Write a Thesis, reprinted in 2017 by La Nave di Teseo, is strongly recommended.
Teaching methods
The workshop consists of ten two-hour in-person sessions, during which students will complete and review practical exercises (source research, bibliography, introduction, etc.) designed to prepare them for writing their thesis.
Attendance at all ten sessions is therefore mandatory. No absences are permitted, including for justified reasons; any absence will result in exclusion from the workshop.
Assessment methods
Each session includes practical exercises that will be reviewed and assessed in class. Throughout the course, students will prepare a paper based on primary sources concerning one government of the Italian Republic. The final session will be devoted to an in-class written essay on the selected government.
Attendance at all ten sessions, completion of the thesis-writing exercises, the research paper, and the final essay are all required to earn the 4 course credits.
All work will be completed during the 20 hours of workshop sessions; no homework is required.
