Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will have acquired knowledge—with particular reference to local economic activities (including healthcare)—regarding: - the clinical aspects of occupational and work-related diseases, or diseases aggravated by work, and their prevention; - workplace injuries; - occupational hygiene and toxicology; - ergonomics; - psychosocial risk factors; - factors that sustain work ability; - work as a means of promoting health.

Introduction and general fundamentals of the discipline.

  • Introduction to occupational medicine: work and health
  • Occupational accidents and diseases
  • Reference legislative frame. The role of the occupational physician.
  • Classification of occupational risk factors.

Occupational diseases.

  • Musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Occupational noise-induced hearing loss.
  • Work-related respiratory disease.
  • Work-related skin disorders.
  • Work-related cancers.

Occupational toxicology and industrial hygiene.

  • Introduction to occupational toxicology and industrial hygiene.
  • Metal toxicity.
  • Toxicity of solvents.

Reproductive health in the workplace.

  • Endocrine disruptors.
  • Reproductive hazards in the workplace. Reference legislative frame.

Health care sector and psychosocial risk factors.

  • Occupational medicine in the healthcare work setting.
  • Psychosocial risk factors in the workplace and related health effects. Models for job-related stress assessment.

Assessment methods

The exam will focus on the issues indicated in the "Course contents" section.

The exam consists in a multiple-choice test, with four answers for each question.Students are asked to select one correct answer from the choices offered as a list.

A total of 64 questions will be included: n.32 on Forensic Medicine, n.32 on Occupational Medicine.

The score is 0.5 for a correct answer, 0 for an incorrect answer or a blank response.

To earn the highest grade with honors, students must answer a total of 61 or more questions correctly.
Intermediate grades will be proportional to the number of correct answers.
Time allotted for the exam: 60 minutes.

For students from previous academic years, the exam format used at that time will remain in effect
