Learning outcomes
By the end of the seminar, students will have acquired further knowledge in linguistics, literature, and/or other related disciplines that are relevant to the advancement of their studies, through interaction with scholars and experts from a range of academic fields.
Course contents
EXPERIMENTAL INTENSIVE SEMINAR
European Women Writers and Artists of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance
Adopting a comparative, interdisciplinary, and gender-studies approach, the seminar will explore several towering figures—women writers who were also artists and women artists who were also writers—active in different European contexts between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
Particular attention will be devoted to the relationship between gender, authority, self-representation, and the reimagining of the world. Authors discussed will include Hildegard of Bingen, Marie de France, Christine de Pizan, sixteenth-century women writers, María de Zayas.

Teaching methods
The seminar consists of an intensive series of compulsory in-person classes, held from 1 to 5 February 2027 and taught by guest lecturers, followed by three additional meetings in the weeks after the intensive seminar. The times and venues of these meetings are still to be confirmed.
The seminar is limited to a maximum of 30 students. Students wishing to participate must register by 15 December 2026 by emailing the course instructor, Patrizia Caraffi, at patrizia.caraffi@unibo.it, with the following subject line: REGISTRATION FOR THE WOMEN WRITERS SEMINAR.
Assessment methods
Students are required to attend at least 80% of the seminar sessions. Attendance will be recorded by means of a signature sheet.
Students will also be required to undertake an individual in-depth project based on the topics covered and present it to the entire group during the meetings scheduled in the weeks following the intensive seminar. The times and venues of these meetings are still to be confirmed.
