Learning outcomes

At the end of the seminar, the student is familiar with the fundamental principles of national legislation concerning the protection and dissemination of the archaeological heritage, as well as with the main management models. They acquire methodological tools to analyze case studies related to the safeguarding of archaeological sites and collections, to identify critical issues and propose sustainable solutions. They are able to apply these skills to real contexts, developing strategies for problem solving, and to update their knowledge by consulting critical literature and best practices in the field of heritage management.

Course contents

The seminar addresses the main regulatory, institutional and operational aspects relating to the protection and management of archaeological heritage. The teaching activities will be structured around two complementary and constantly integrated strands: one focusing on the legislative and administrative frameworks governing the field of archaeological heritage, and the other – conducted in close collaboration with the Head of the Education and Research Department at the ABAP Superintendency in Bologna – focusing on the operational procedures and practical applications that characterise the professional practice of archaeologists.

Particular attention will be paid to the professional role of the archaeologist, analysed in relation to the skills required for understanding and managing the territory, the tools for investigation and documentation, as well as relations with the public and private bodies involved in the protection of cultural heritage. The main analytical tools used in spatial planning, archaeological risk prevention and the management of archaeological finds will be examined.

The organisation and functions of the Ministry of Culture and the relevant territorial offices will be outlined, with particular reference to the protection system provided for by national legislation and the relationship between the protection and enhancement of cultural heritage. Through an analysis of the "Code of Cultural Heritage and the Landscape" and the main spatial planning instruments, the administrative procedures governing interventions on the territory and archaeological research activities will be examined in depth.

A significant part of the seminar will be devoted to the management of case studies relating to archaeological sites, contexts and collections, with the aim of developing skills in critical analysis, identifying issues and defining sustainable intervention strategies. Concrete examples of preventive conservation, archaeological risk management, conservation, enhancement and public access to heritage will be discussed, highlighting the role of the archaeologist in decision-making processes and coordination activities.

The seminar will also examine in depth the ways in which archaeologists collaborate with other professionals working in the field of cultural heritage conservation, such as architects, conservators, art historians, geologists and officials from the Heritage Authorities, with a view to understanding the interdisciplinary dynamics that characterise research, conservation and enhancement projects.

Finally, the seminar will address the topic of the scientific direction of archaeological excavations, analysing the responsibilities, duties and operational procedures within the various management models, both in activities coordinated directly by the Superintendencies and in contexts entrusted to public or private bodies.

Teaching methods

The course is organised into lectures, and attendance is strongly recommended.

The traditional academic quarter-hour will be observed, unless otherwise agreed during the introductory lecture.

Assessment methods

Attendance: a student is considered to be attending if they attend at least 75% of the lessons.

Assessment method: 10 closed-ended questions. The test is passed with the following marks: 6/10 (sufficient)；7–8/10 (good)；9–10/10 (excellent)

The overall assessment will take the following criteria into account:

- Mastery of the content, the ability to analyse topics and concepts, the ability to express oneself adequately using language appropriate to the subject matter, and the ability to critically discuss a specific problem relating to the subject will be awarded top marks.

- rote knowledge of the subject matter, combined with the ability to summarise and analyse in correct but not always appropriate language, will result in moderate marks.

- gaps in knowledge and/or inappropriate language – even where there is a minimal understanding of the examination material – will result in marks that do not exceed the pass mark and will require the student to retake the examination.

Teaching tools

During the classes, visual presentations of course materials will illustrate the course content. The lecture will be accompanied by presentation slides that will subsequently be available via VIRTUALE.
