Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will acquire:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the main approaches and intervention areas developed by applied psychology for human resource management in organizations, enabling them to understand the psychosocial theories underlying these approaches and to evaluate their limitations and critical aspects.
  • Methodological expertise in job and task analysis, personnel recruitment and selection, training and development, and performance evaluation and management, including the use of organizational KPIs and metrics, developing competencies that enable the use of these techniques and tools.
  • Understanding of the role of organizational structure, climate, and culture, as well as leadership and team dynamics, in managing organizational change and innovation.
  • Knowledge of the impact of automation, robotics, and AI on work, together with the human-factors and human-AI interaction principles needed to support workplace health and safety in increasingly sociotechnical environments.
  • Applied skills to implement the acquired knowledge in creating an effective and satisfying work environment

 

Course contents

Module 1 — Human resource management and development

  • Job analysis: data-collection methods (observation, interviews, structured questionnaires, document analysis); development of job descriptions and job specifications; use of the results to support HRM.
  • Personnel selection: definition of competency profiles; methods and techniques (structured and behavioural interviews, psychometric and ability tests, assessment centres); evaluation of selection and onboarding effectiveness (validity, utility, fairness).
  • Training and development: needs analysis at the individual, role, and organizational levels; design and evaluation of interventions (Kirkpatrick model, transfer of learning); methods and techniques (experiential training, on-the-job training, coaching, digital learning).
  • Performance appraisal and KPIs: conceptual and concrete indicators of performance; appraisal and feedback systems (multiple sources, 360°, reduction of rating bias); organizational KPIs and the distinction between lagging and leading indicators; dashboards and balanced scorecards, with examples in HR (turnover, time-to-hire, eNPS, training ROI), operations/quality (OEE, lead time, NPS), and safety (frequency/severity rates, near-miss reporting); risks and distorting effects of metrics (gaming, Goodhart's law).

Module 2 — Leadership, groups, and teams

  • Leadership: approaches to its study (from traits to behaviours, through to situational and relational approaches); styles and their effectiveness (transformational and transactional, leadership in digital and virtual contexts); development of leadership skills.
  • Groups and teams: group dynamics and the team life cycle; factors of effectiveness (psychological safety, coordination, the input-process-output model); management of decision-making, relationships, and conflict (e.g., groupthink).

Module 3 — Organization: structure, culture, change, and innovation

  • Organizational structure and culture: types of organizational structures and their characteristics; elements and levels of culture; alignment between structure, culture, and business strategy.
  • Organizational change: theoretical models; resistance to change and strategies to overcome it; management of the change process and effective communication.
  • Innovation: types of innovation (product, process, organizational); factors that foster or hinder innovation; innovation management and the development of an innovative culture.

Module 4 — Technology, human factors, and safety

  • Technology and work: impact of automation, robotics, and AI on roles and the organization; the logic of substitution vs augmentation of human capabilities; management of technological change and development of digital skills (upskilling and reskilling).
  • Human factors and human-AI interaction: cognitive ergonomics, mental workload, and situation awareness; automation bias, complacency, trust and its calibration; human-AI teaming and meaningful human oversight; AI literacy and the critical use of generative systems (anthropomorphism, cognitive offloading, sycophantic behaviour / sycophancy).
  • Occupational safety: accident models (sequential, epidemiological, systemic; Reason's "Swiss cheese"); HFACS, just culture, resilience engineering, and the Safety-I/Safety-II perspective; safety culture and climate and management systems (ISO 45001); prevention strategies at the individual and organizational levels and psychosocial risks.

Assessment methods

General Information on Written Exam

The exam is written and consists of a test with multiple-choice questions and 2 open-ended questions. Sample exam questions will be provided during lectures.

Questions will cover the entire recommended textbook and slides made available on Virtuale.unibo.it. There are no differences between attending and non-attending students in the exam program. Attendance is encouraged to acquire knowledge progressively and participate in classroom exercises. Open-ended questions require writing in the available space. Open-ended questions are evaluated based on the following criteria: relevance, completeness, and clarity of response. Closed questions present four different answer alternatives, only one of which is correct. The test assigns a maximum of 31 points.

During the exam, no aids are permitted, including calculators, dictionaries, or other support tools. The time allowed for the exam is 1 hour.

To register for the exam, students must register through the Almaesami application. The exam will be conducted online.

Scoring

A passing grade is achieved by scoring 18 points, considering the sum of points from both open-ended and closed questions. Honors (lode) is awarded for a perfect exam (31 points collected), meaning correct answers to all closed questions and fully satisfactory responses (completely relevant, complete, and clear) to open-ended questions.

Students with Learning Disabilities or Disabilities
