Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide advanced methods for understanding landscape and seascape in their biocultural diversity, meant as the interrelation between environmental and anthropic processes on land and sea. The student will acquire basic knowledge on biocultural landscape and seascapes, their tangible and intangible values, traditional ecological knowledge, sacred species and sites, the right to landscape and biocultural networks. The theoretical background will be linked to the demonstration of practical international techniques for describing the bond between different landscape and seascapes with their ecosystems and social communities, useful to grasp the gist of ecological landscape planning, and integrated coastal zone management. The implementation of this phase will be carried out in working group exercises, and field trips where the students will be immerse to perceive regional landscapes and seascapes. The knowledge acquired on biocultural diversity will support a better comprehension of the new global directions in environmental conservation, considering sustainable development goals with a citizen science and participatory approach to promote resilient societies and responsible management of natural resources.
