- Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Nautical Engineering (cod. 5947)
Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide students with physical principles, mathematical tools, and their application to the design of marine vehicles and structures. Specifically, it aims to provide students with the tools necessary for the design, evaluation, and analysis of floating vehicles and structures under dynamic conditions. At the end of the course, students will be able to evaluate the dynamic behavior of floating bodies and analyze their performance under various operating conditions.
Course contents
1. WINDSHIPS AND SAILING YACHTS (nomenclature, sail aerodynamics, free-body diagram including static and dynamic forces).
2. FOILING VESSELS (hydrodynamics of foils, free-body diagram including static and dynamic forces, stability and control).
3. VELOCITY PREDICTION PROGRAMMES (methodologies to predict vessel's performances in static and dynamic conditions including wind and wind-assisted propulsions for displacement, planning, and foiling hulls).
4. MANOEUVRING (directional stability and control, classical manoeuvres and evaluation of manoeuvring ability, manoeuvring devices, rudder area forces and torques, vessel handling, dynamical stability).
5. SEAKEEPING (ship's and yacht's motions and responses, motions in regular and irregular waves, limiting factors, wave data and RAO, stabilization).

Lecture Notes provided by the Lecturer
Teaching methods
Lectures and frontal exercises held by the teacher. During the course, seminars could be organized held by highly qualified personnel and regarding technological aspects of the course. The topics of the seminars held will form an integral part of the program and may be subject to verification during the exam.
Assessment methods
The assessment will take place through an oral examination in which the student must demonstrate sufficient skills of the topics presented in class and be able to summarize the knowledge gained. The student must demonstrate sufficient preparation in each of the required topics. The final grade will be assigned by the committee based on the overall preparation demonstrated.
Teaching tools
Whiteboard /blackboard and PowerPoint presentations.
