Learning outcomes

The student acquires knowledge of the different types of research studies, measurements, and social research tools. The student is able to apply these concepts to the construction of a thesis as a research tool, and to the publication of an article or a poster. Primary studies: sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic accuracy, and predictive values of diagnostic tools. Secondary studies: Characteristics of secondary studies. Systematic reviews and Guidelines.

Course contents

The EBP cycle and the formulation of the clinical question (PICO model)

Research portals and search strategies in databases: boolean operators, filters, and source selection

Scientific literature: quantitative studies (primary observational and experimental), qualitative studies, and secondary studies (systematic reviews and meta-analyses), guidelines

The hierarchy of evidence: assessment of study design strength and risk of bias

Elements of academic writing: the abstract and the thesis

The "ECM" system as a tool for maintaining evidence-based practice
