Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • understand the main fields of enquiry and methodologies of historical-pedagogical research;
  • understand the historical development of educational services, at both local and national level, considered in their different forms and in relation to the emergence of welfare policies;
  • understand the historical development of models, figures and experiences that contributed to the establishment of educational services mainly aimed at children and adolescents;
  • identify the pedagogical value of different models of educational services, considered within their historical dynamics;
  • use the historical knowledge acquired to carry out critical and project-oriented analyses of the educational quality of current services;
  • apply their skills in historical-educational research in order to undertake further study with a high degree of autonomy.

Course contents

The course explores the history of extra-scholastic educational institutions in Italian society from the nineteenth century to the aftermath of the Second World War, analysing their development in relation to the historical, social and political context.

The course will address, in particular, issues relating to the contribution of women’s emancipation movements, the emergence and transformation of new socio-educational institutions.

It will also examine the historical development of educational institutions for children and adolescents, considered in their various forms. Special emphasis will be placed on the interconnection between social policies and educational interventions aimed at minors, within the complex historical dynamics of Italy between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Teaching methods

Lectures with opportunities for debate and guided discussion. The course also includes individual and/or group activities on the topics addressed, with particular emphasis on the opportunity for students to carry out a research project aimed at exploring, from a historical-educational perspective and using the methodology presented during the course, a figure or an educational institution from the past.

Assessment methods

For what concern, the exam consists on a written exam. It aims to evaluate the acquisition of knowledge, with a critical awareness on the aspects and the cultural areas of the discipline. The achievement by the student of an organic vision of the topics covered in the course, joint to a critical capacity, in addition to the proof of possession of a mastery of expression and specific language will be assessed with a mark of excellence. The knowledge expressed with capacity for synthesis and analysis not fully argued and / or correct language but not always appropriate assessments will lead to a discrete evalutation; training gaps and / or inappropriate language on the minimum content of the program will lead to marks that will not exceed the sufficiency. Training gaps and lexical inappropriate will only be evaluated negatively. Failure to respond to a question not allow you to successfully pass the exam.

Final score based on ../30 (18 is considered the minimum to pass the exam).
