Learning outcomes
Integrated Course: The Integrated Course in CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY aims to provide medical students with a solid foundation in the fundamental principles of chemistry and biochemistry essential for understanding biological processes and human physiology. By combining general and organic chemistry topics with biochemical mechanisms, the course ensures a coherent learning experience that links molecular structure and chemical reactions to understanding metabolic pathways and cellular function. The close integration between Chemistry and Biochemistry is designed to foster a cohesive scientific framework, linking molecular structure and physical principles to diagnostics, and therapeutic applications in medicine. This integrated approach facilitates the comprehension of key biochemical concepts that underpin modern medical sciences, preparing students for subsequent clinical and biomedical courses. Learning Activity: By the end of the BIOCHEMISTRY LABORATORY course the student will be able to:- Describe the principal biochemical techniques and their applications in medicine.
Course contents
Lectures:
- Luminescent Biosensors for biomedical application
- Immunoglobulins and Immunotherapy
Clinical case study presentations
Practical laboratory experiences:
- extraction and quantification of proteins;
- enzyme activity evaluation of salivary α-amilase;
- evaluation of reducing sugars in acqueous solution.
Mock exam
Readings/Bibliography
PowerPoint presentations integrated by personal notes can give a useful outline of the course.
For the practical lab experiences, protocols will be available in Virtuale.
Teaching methods
The teaching methods include group work for presenting case studies, in-person practical laboratory sessions, computer-based exercises using Excel, and seminars delivered by foreign professors who are experts in the biomedical field.
Assessment methods
The course does not include a final exam but attendance in at least 1 practical laboratory experience and clinical case presentation is mandatory.
At the end of each practical experience, the student will have to answer a short self-assessment questionnaire.
Teaching tools
All the lectures will be supported by PowerPoint presentations and .pdf protocols, downloadable from virtuale.it
Wooclap and Jove Apps will be used for a learning auto-evaluation.
