Learning outcomes

The course aims to analyse the main organisational theories and explore human resource management in depth as a key element in achieving organisational objectives. In particular, the following topics are covered: a) the evolution of organisational theories; b) the relationship between strategy and people management; c) the human resource cycle (planning, recruitment and selection; career development; training; assessment of role, skills, performance and potential; remuneration and benefits); d) cultural, legal and social aspects of human resource management; e) managing remote teams.

0. Introduction:

Management engineer as an organizational designer; organizations as complex systems; designing by influencing behavior (which levers).

1. Organizational Culture (Chapter 14 + readings)

  • What organizational culture is;
  • How to identify it (how employees learn a culture); How to measure it;
  • Why it is important: the role of organizational culture, functions and dysfunctions;
  • Organizational culture and national culture;
  • Practice-culture fit/misfit (reading).

2. Organizational Structure – readings

  • Main types of organizational structures with advantages and disadvantages;
  • Why modify the organizational structure;
  • Vertical coordination mechanisms;
  • Horizontal coordination mechanisms;
  • Digital bank case study with new AI competence.

3. Influencing Behavior: Designing a PMS (Performance Management System) – readings

  • Design and monitoring of organizational KPIs; Objectives, Goals, Metrics; Formative and Reflective Measures;
  • What a PMS is;
  • How to implement PMSs; Roles and Advantages;
  • PMS and alignment with culture/paradigms (Homebuilder case reading);
  • PMS and horizontal/vertical performance (Matrix Alignment reading).

4. Organizational Change (Chapter 15 for the 2016 edition, Chapter 16 for the 2021 edition + readings)

  • Change and planned change;
  • Resistance to organizational change;
  • Different approaches to managing organizational change;
  • The culture of change and designing change in different contexts;
  • Design techniques under uncertainty.

Assessment methods

a) INDIVIDUAL MULTIPLE-CHOICE EXAM

The individual exam:

  • consists of multiple-choice questions;
  • is a component of the integrated exam (covering both courses: Organizational Behavior and Organization and Human Resource Management).
  • takes place in Lab 6, Via Terracini.
  • is accessible by registering for the "Organization and Human Resource Management" exam sessions on AlmaEsami. The exam dates are available and already published on AlmaEsami. Students are advised to register for the appropriate list (following the instructions on AlmaEsami). If a student registers for the wrong list and therefore takes the wrong exam, or does not take both exams, the exam grade will be annulled.

b) TEAM-BASED BUSINESS LABORATORY ASSIGNMENT

The course includes several laboratory sessions in collaboration with companies from the local area.

The laboratory work is carried out in teams.

Each team must choose one laboratory and prepare a report following the format and deadlines provided in class. The report will concern the application of the concepts and tools learned during the course to the analysis of the selected laboratory case, accompanied by recommendations to the manager proposed by the authors of the report.

Submitting a report allows students to earn additional points to be added to the grade of the individual exam.
