Learning outcomes

The Histology and Anatomy course aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge and useful tools to prepare students to recognize the distribution of tissues and organs in the human body, their main structural and functional characteristics and their organization. At the end of the course, students will have general knowledge of histology and macroscopic anatomy of the main organs of the human body. Students will have an in-depth knowledge of the microscopic anatomy of the organs of the various systems, which is essential to understand the mechanisms that regulate their functioning. Students will also be able to make organ diagnoses on normal anatomical preparations.

Course contents

In order to optimize the learning experience, the following prerequisites are recommended: basic concepts of cell biology

 

Module 1 - Frontal lessons (2 UC)

General histology and histogenesis: stem cells and differentiation. General organization of the different tissues: classification and general characteristics.

Lymphatic system: macroscopic notes on the organization of the lymphatic organs. Microscopic structure of lymph nodes, thymus and spleen.

Urinary system: macroscopic notes on the kidney and urinary tract. Microscopic structure of kidney and urinary bladder.

Female genital system: macroscopic notes and microscopic structure of ovaries and uterus.

Male genital system: macroscopic notes and microscopic structure of testicle and prostate gland.

 

Module 2 - Frontal lessons (2 UC)

General Aspects: anatomical terminology. Plans and axes of the human body. Parenchymal and hollow organs

Cardiovascular system: heart and pericardium. Small and large circulation. Coronary arteries and conduction system of the heart. Classification of arteries, veins, capillaries. Notes on the course of the aorta artery and vena cava. Microscopic structure of the cardiac wall.

Respiratory system: macroscopic notes on the upper (nasal cavities, pharynx) and lower (trachea and lungs) airways. Microscopic structure of trachea, bronchi and lungs.

Digestive system: macroscopic notes on the organs and glands of the digestive system (oral cavity, major salivary glands, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver and pancreas) and their anatomical relationships. Microscopic structure of tongue, major salivary glands, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas

 

Module 3 - Laboratory (1 UC)

Description of the different techniques necessary for the slide preparation for optical microscopy and direct observation under the optical microscope of histological slides for organ diagnosis

Teaching methods

Lectures with extensive use of models of different organs

Laboratory: observation of slides

In consideration of the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, all students (including international incoming exchange students, i.e. ERASMUS) must attend Module 1 and 2 online

Assessment methods

The final test involves passing a multiple choice quiz (weight 40%) and the recognition of a microscopic preparation in an oral interview (weight 60%) which will verify the knowledge acquired. The average of the marks obtained in the two tests will give the result of the entire course

 

The multiple choice test consists of a 30-minute quiz with 30 multiple choice questions that must be taken before the oral test and whose validity lasts only for the session in which it was taken. For each correct question students gain 1 point. Unanswered or incorrect questions give 0 points. To pass the written test students must achieve a score of 18/30. The score obtained represents 40% of the final grade. The test is administered by using the Unibo EOL platform. Each student logs in via their own electronic device, without the possibility of accessing other concomitant web pages. No additional instruments are permitted during the test

 

The oral interview involves the recognition of a preparation under the microscope, which will be considered sufficient if a score from 18/30 to 30/30 is obtained, according to the following scheme:

Lack of preparation, serious and repeated conceptual errors → <18

Preparation on a very limited number of topics and analytical skills that emerge only with the help of the teacher, expressed in an overall correct language → 18-19

Preparation on a limited number of topics and ability to perform autonomous analysis only on purely executive matters, expression in correct language → 20-24

Preparation on a large number of topics, ability to make independent critical analysis choices, mastery of specific terminology → 25-29

Exhaustive preparation on the topics, ability to make independent critical analysis and connection choices, full mastery of specific terminology and ability to argue and self-reflect → 30-30L (honors will be added in case of outstanding preparation)

 

To access the exam, online booking on Almaesami before the exam is mandatory

 

For students with learning difficulties, intellectual disabilities or temporary or permanent disabilities: it is advisable to promptly contact the competent university office, which will be responsible for suggesting any specific adaptations. All requests must however be submitted at least 15 days in advance for approval by the teachers, who will evaluate the relevance of the request, also taking into account the educational objectives of the course

 

Regarding learning assessment, the use of AI is prohibited. Any such use constitutes a violation of academic integrity
