Learning outcomes
At the end of the laboratory, the student is able to:
- apply the specific techniques learned independently or within educational projects organised by institutions;
- discuss with other professionals the use and documentation of the techniques learned;
- apply the specific knowledge acquired in different types of educational services;
- evaluate the strengths and limitations of the technical tools and methods learned;
- adapt the techniques learned to different contexts by making appropriate modifications and personal integrations.
Course contents
Techniques and tools for observation in early childhood educational services
The workshop focuses on observation as a fundamental skill and professional tool for educators in early childhood educational services.
In particular, through reference to concrete cases and examples and the proposal of observational activities supported by the use of printed and audiovisual materials, the workshop aims to promote:
- reflection on the possible bias inherent in the act of observing and the differences between spontaneous/occasional observation and systematic observation;
- awareness of the different aspects involved in designing an observation plan;
- knowledge and critical analysis of different observation procedures, techniques and tools;
- the ability to identify, in relation to different observation procedures and tools, criteria and operational strategies to increase validity and reliability of observational data;
- the acquisition of skills related to the use of specific observation tools.

Materials and bibliographical references will be provided during the workshop.
Teaching methods
Student participation through discussion and individual/group work will be promoted during the workshop.

Assessment methods will focus on monitoring the level of student participation and analyzing individual and group work carried out during the workshop.
