Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will have a preparation that allows them to understand the morpho-functional bases of the organization of the systems of the human body, with particular regard to the stomatognathic system. In particular, students will be able to: • know and use the instruments for microscopic observation; • recognize the microscopic organization of the eucharyotic cell; • know the differentiation mechanisms that lead to the formation of embryonic layers; • identify the organization of the various classes of tissues; • recognize the organization and functional characteristics of the mucous membranes of the oral cavity and salivary glands; • know the development and physiological evolution of dental tissues; • possess the basis for the interpretation of the physio-pathological processes that concern the stomatognathic system; • coordinate knowledge of basic disciplines to recognize the cellular and tissue bases of pathological processes.
Course contents
In order to optimize the learning experience, the following prerequisites are recommended: basic concepts of cell biology
GENERAL HISTOLOGY
Histogenesis, stem cells and differentiation
General organization of the human tissues: classification and general characteristics
Epithelial tissues: characteristics and classification. Lining epithelia: classification and morpho-functional aspects. Exocrine and endocrine glandular epithelia and secretory system: classification and morpho-functional aspects
Tissues of mesenchymal origin: embryonic connective tissue or mesenchyme. Adult proper connective tissue. Adipose tissue. Trophic and fluid connective tissues: blood cells, plasma and hematopoietic tissue, notes on the mechanisms of hematopoiesis. Lymphoid tissue: notes on cells and organs of the lymphatic system
Supporting connective tissues: cartilage: organization, cells and extracellular matrix. Bone: organization and classification, cells and extracellular matrix, mineralization of the matrix and bone remodeling.
Muscle tissues: classification and morpho-functional aspects of skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle tissue
Nervous tissue: neurons and glial cells. Organization of central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. Axon, synapse structure and myelin sheath. Morpho-functional aspects of glial cells

Craniofacial development and growth
Odontogenesis - Dentinogenesis – Amelogenesis
Dental tissues: enamel, dentin, cement, pulp

Teaching methods
Frontal lectures and Laboratory work experience in Histology Lab
In consideration of the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, all students (including all the international incoming exchange students, i.e. ERASMUS) must attend Module 1 and 2 online
Assessment methods
The Module is integrated with the Human Anatomy, Biochemistry, Applied Biology and Molecular Biology Courses. The final evaluation takes into account the grades of the entire Integrated Course, weighted average
Oral examination aiming to verify the students' ability to apply their knowledge and make the necessary logical-deductive connections, focusing on achieving the learning objectives, specifically related to general histology and odontostomatologic histology and embryology
The oral examination will be based on at least two topics among all contents covered during the course, including the laboratory sectionThe exam will be considered sufficient with a score ranging from 18/30 to 30/30, according to the following scheme:
Lack of preparation, serious and repeated conceptual errors → <18
Preparation on a very limited number of topics and analytical skills that emerge only with the help of the teacher, expressed in an overall correct language → 18-19
Preparation on a limited number of topics and ability to perform autonomous analysis only on purely executive matters, expression in correct language → 20-24
Preparation on a large number of topics, ability to make independent choices of critical analysis, mastery of specific terminology → 25-29
Exhaustive preparation on the topics, ability to make autonomous choices of critical analysis and connection, full mastery of specific terminology, and ability to argue and self-reflection → 30-30L (honors will be added in case of outstanding preparation)
