Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, the student will have critically acquired the latest evidence regarding the etiopathogenesis, classification, assessment, and physiotherapeutic treatment of pelvic floor dysfunctions.

Course contents

- Anatomy and functions of the pelvic-perineal complex:

  • Passive support structure
  • Active support structure

- Overview of lower urinary tract physiology

- Functional synergy between the oral diaphragm, thoracic diaphragm, abdominal wall and perineum

- Pelvic-perineal dysfunctions

Functional deficits:

  • stress, urge, and mixed urinary incontinence
  • Obstructed defecation syndrome (ODS)
  • Constipation
  • fecal and/or gas incontinence

Anatomical deficits:

  • pelvic organ prolapse

Pelvic-perineal pain syndromes:

  • Introduction to chronic pelvic pain

- Physiotherapeutic assessment of the female and male pelvic floor:

  • Medical history
  • taking Voiding and bowel diaries
  • Assessment scales
  • Neurological, muscular, and postural assessment
  • Description of diagnostic instrumental tests

- Rehabilitation techniques and tools

  • Pelvic Floor Muscle Training Electromyographic and pressure biofeedback
  • Electrostimulation
  • Bladder training
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Overview of peripheral neuromodulation
  • Overview of TECAR therapy

- Rehabilitation of perineal dysfunctions in:

  • pre- and postpartum
  • care post-radical prostatectomy recovery
  • collaboration with other healthcare professionals

Rehabilitation of postpartum abdominal diastasis:

  •   hypopressive technique
  • normopressive technique

- Overview of pelvic floor dysfunction prevention in sports

Assessment methods

In-person oral exam based on the discussion of clinical cases.

The purpose of the oral exam is to assess the student's ability to apply their knowledge and make the necessary logical-deductive connections.

Final grade: pass
