Course contents

The seminar is intended for students planning to write their undergraduate thesis in a discipline within the field of Classical and Ancient Studies.
The seminar will address key aspects of thesis preparation, with particular focus on defining a research topic, constructing a coherent argument, and organizing the written work. Practical guidance will be provided on how to compile a scholarly bibliography and how to critically use digital resources relevant to Classical and Ancient Studies (such as databases, bibliographic indexes, digital editions, and lexicographic tools), as well as on how to select and manage both primary and secondary sources.
Part of the seminar will also be devoted to citation practices in line with academic standards. Special attention will be given to writing, understood as care for formulation, clarity of expression, and grammatical accuracy.

Students wishing to attend the seminar must register at least 7 days before the start of classes by filling out the form at the following link:

Readings/Bibliography

The relevant texts and didactic materials will be made available over the course of the seminar.

Teaching methods

The course consists of 30 hours of lectures, during which students may also be involved in individual or group exercises.

Assessment methods

The seminar is assessed on a pass/fail basis rather than by a numerical grade. To obtain a pass, students are required to attend at least 12 of the 15 scheduled sessions; attendance will be recorded throughout the course.

Assessment will be based on a short written assignment consisting of an abstract for a proposed thesis, through which students are expected to demonstrate that they have acquired the basic skills and methodological competencies required for planning and writing a thesis. The use of generative artificial intelligence tools to replace individual writing in the preparation of the abstract is prohibited.

The abstract must be submitted to the instructor a few days before the examination date and will subsequently be discussed during a brief oral examination, which will take place in person on the day of the examination.

Teaching tools

During the course, slides will be presented and links to databases and digital resources useful for bibliographic research and the preparation of the bachelor’s thesis will be provided. Writing activities will also be offered in conjunction with the self-paced course «Scrivere all'università».
