Course contents

How to write a thesis in Theory of Literature, Comparative Literature, Contemporary Italian Literature and related disciplines

The seminar is aimed at all students interested in writing their thesis in a literary discipline in the critical-comparative and contemporary fields (i.e. Theory of Literature, Comparative Literature, Sociology of Literature, Contemporary Italian Literature etc.).

The seminar will cover the basics of bibliographic research and how to correctly cite sources in the text, how to choose a thesis topic (with reference to critical-comparative and contemporary literary disciplines), how to structure the topics, and how to write an essay.

At the end of the course, students will be required to write a short abstract for a potential dissertation project, which will then be discussed  during an oral interview.

Students interested in attending the seminar are required to register using their Unibo accounts within 7 days before the start of classes using the following form: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/rNrC5yXqaz

Readings/Bibliography

Study materials will be provided during the seminar.

Teaching methods

The course is based on 30 hours of lectures, during which students will be involved in individual or group exercises.

Assessment methods

The seminar does not involve an examinarion with a grade, but rather a pass/fail assessment. To pass, students are required to attend at least 12 out of 15 sessions. An attendance register will be kept.

At the end of the seminar, students will be required to write a short abstract for a potential dissertation project. The text must be written independently by each student and sent by email at least 5 days before the exam session. The use of generative artificial intelligence tools that replace individual writing work is prohibited.

The abstract will then be discussed during a brief oral discussion, which will take place in person on the day of the examination.

Teaching tools

Slides and links to databases or digital resources useful for bibliographic research and the compilation of a three-year thesis will be shown.

Writing exercises will also be provided in conjunction with the self-study course ‘Writing at University’.
