Learning outcomes
At the end of the module, students will acquire the knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles underlying the main neurophysiological recording techniques.
Course contents
The course aims to provide an introduction to the main neurophysiological diagnostic techniques and to the professional role of the Neurophysiology Technician.
The topics covered include:
- Course introduction and organization.
- The professional profile of the Neurophysiology Technician: competencies, responsibilities, and fields of practice.
- Introduction to electroencephalography (EEG): basic principles, clinical indications, and major instrumental variants (HD-EEG, aEEG, EEG-fMRI integration, and an introduction to magnetoencephalography).
- Overview of brain death assessment.
- Introduction to polysomnography (PSG) and the main polygraphic recordings.
- Introduction to evoked potentials (EPs) and their principal clinical applications.
- Introduction to electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS).
- Overview of autonomic nervous system function tests.
- Introduction to intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IOM).
- Overview of neurosonology.
- Survey of the main clinical settings in which the Neurophysiology Technician practices.
