B9016 - GESTIONE ED ESERCIZIO DEI SISTEMI DI TRASPORTO COLLETTIVO M

Academic Year 2026/2027

  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Civil Engineering (cod. 6709)

Learning outcomes

The course focuses on the specificities and complexities associated with the management and operation of collective transport networks for medium to long distances and aims to provide the necessary skills to plan, manage and optimise the operation of transport systems that operate on inter-urban, regional, national and international routes, in particular by means such as aircraft, high-speed trains, long-distance buses, ferries, with the aim of guaranteeing efficiency, sustainability and quality of service. The course aims to provide adequate preparation to face the challenges related to the management of complex and large-scale systems, with the objective of creating advanced skills in operational management, service planning, the use of modern technologies and the creation of sustainable policies for the future of long-distance collective mobility. In particular, the skills acquired will range from the ability to design, plan and manage collective transport networks over medium and long distances, taking into account passenger demand, economic feasibility and geographical characteristics, to intermodal coordination between different modes of transport to create attractive travel solutions, optimising connections between distant cities and regions.

Course contents

General characteristics of extra-urban public transport systems: classification; modes (land, air, sea); levels of regulation; key stakeholders.

Nodes and routes in extra-urban public transport: supply model; characteristics of graphs and networks for the various extra-urban public transport systems; scheduled services; temporal variability of demand and supply.

Land, air and sea transport systems: stakeholders; vehicles (technical characteristics, vehicle types by mode of transport); the structure of supply by mode of transport (routes and services); control/management systems by mode of transport; multimodal hubs; integration/competition between different modes; transport service costs and their modelling; terminal management services; hub and route capacity; impacts.

Teaching methods

Lectures and Practical / Workshops.

The course includes theoretical and practical activities in the classroom to facilitate learning of the contents.

Seminars with external professionals and experts working in the relevant sectors are also planned.

Assessment methods

Written test made by theoretical and practical questions. Questions will concern the course contents, as described in the detailed program. The goal of the written test is to evaluate students’ knowledge and their ability to apply such knowledge in a working environment by using a system approach able to link the functional design of a single transport element to the transport network analysis and the produced effects.

Regular class attendance is strongly recommended for effective learning, included for assessment purposes, as practical examples and application cases are discussed interactively during the lectures.

Regarding learning assessments, the use of AI is prohibited. Any use constitutes a violation of academic integrity.
