Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student will have knowledge of the technologies that constitute the existing built heritage, being able to distinguish them and recognize the related problems. The student will therefore have knowledge of transformation, construction, maintenance, recovery and management techniques, with particular attention to performance design and social, economic and environmental sustainability.

Course contents

Section 1: Definition and Regulatory Framework

Definition of built heritage. Types of intervention on built heritage. Regulatory framework / Statutory references.

Section 2: Monumental Stone Buildings

Monumental natural stone buildings. Restoration, routine maintenance, and extraordinary maintenance.

Section 3: Historic Masonry Buildings

Historic load-bearing masonry buildings. Functional recovery, refurbishment, and structural improvement.

Section 4: Existing Reinforced Concrete Buildings

Existing reinforced concrete buildings. Performance enhancement, environmental-energy retrofitting, structural strengthening, and structural upgrading.

Teaching methods

The course is based on the analysis of case studies related to intervention practices on built heritage in Italy. The case studies are selected based on their construction technology and period of construction.

The first case study concerns an ancient historical monument, its evolutionary history, and the restoration and maintenance activities carried out.

The second case study involves a 19th-20th century masonry building, subject to heritage protection regulations, currently undergoing recovery.

The third case study focuses on a reinforced concrete structure building from the late 20th century.

Assessment methods

Presentation and discussion of the personally developed material on each of the three proposed case studies.
