Learning outcomes

This course represents the design-oriented application of the course "Railway Infrastructure Construction (M)", with which it is closely integrated. Upon successful completion, students will acquire knowledge of the regulatory framework and practical aspects involved in railway infrastructure design, and will be able to develop the main design, sizing, and calculation procedures, also through the use of dedicated numerical tools.

Course contents

Design criteria for railway alignments. Railway vehicle dynamics, running resistance, vehicle behaviour on curves.

Classification of railway lines.

Horizontal and vertical alignment design: track gauge, cant (superelevation), transition curves, and vertical curves.

Railway switches and crossings.

Railway stations.

Teaching methods

The course combines classroom-based theoretical lectures with a parallel practical design project. Students work in groups of two or three to prepare the main technical documents of a railway line design project. Completion of the project is mandatory.

Assessment methods

The final examination consists of an oral examination, including the discussion of the railway design project developed during the course.
