Course contents

Title: Vocal Research and Self-Care

The seminar explores the intersections between musical and theatrical research, building on courses devoted to research methodologies and artistic creation processes. Through an interdisciplinary perspective, it brings together historical and critical approaches, performance practices, and research methodologies, fostering dialogue with scholars from European universities as well as artists engaged in experimental work at the intersection of music and theatre.

This year's edition focuses on the voice in relation to "mysticism" and the concept of "care of the self," as developed within aesthetic, philosophical, and epistemological thought—from early Greek philosophy to non-European traditions, and through to recent developments in contemporary theatre research. Drawing on the work of figures such as Cathy Berberian, Demetrio Stratos, Antonin Artaud, Carmelo Bene, Gabriella Bartolomei, Perla Peragallo, Chiara Guidi, Ermanna Montanari, and Claron McFadden, the seminar will investigate the voice in its sonic and embodied dimensions, beyond the boundaries of speech and articulated language. Through lectures, case studies, and seminar discussions, students will acquire theoretical and methodological tools for analysing the role of the voice in the creative processes of music, theatre, and contemporary performance.

The list of international guest speakers for this year's edition of the seminar is currently being finalized.
