B8598 - TECNOLOGIE A BASSA EMISSIONE PER L'INDUSTRIA ENERGETICA M

Academic Year 2026/2027

  • Moduli: Marco Giacinti Baschetti (Modulo 1) Matteo Minelli (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially) (Modulo 1); In-person learning (entirely or partially) (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Chemical and Process Engineering (cod. 6706)

Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide students with an overview of applications related to the emissions reduction in the energy industry, focusing both on processes involving in the use of petroleum derivatives for energy production and on new technologies related to decarbonization and the use of new fuels (hydrogen – biofuels).

Course contents

Prerequisite Knowledge

  • Material and energy balances, both in local and integral form, as well as knowledge of transport phenomena (heat and mass transfer).
  • Basic thermodynamics of pure substances and mixtures.
  • Knowledge of the fundamental unit operations of chemical and process engineering.

Syllabus

  • Overview of conventional energy production processes and technologies, with a focus on fuel types, production and processing chains, and on their environmental impact.
  • Technologies and strategies for decarbonization.
  • Carbon Capture and Storage/Utilization (CCS/CCU): description of the approach and possible strategies, with a focus on pre-combustion capture and chemical looping.
  • Analysis of the CO₂ transportation chain and storage technologies.
  • The role of low-impact separation technologies for CO₂ capture and H₂ production: gas separation membranes, adsorption processes, and integrated systems.
  • Hydrogen as an energy carrier: challenges related to its production, transportation, and storage.
  • Zero-impact fuels: examples related to biogas production and upgrading.

Readings/Bibliography

Lecture notes provided by the instructor.

Teaching methods

Lectures delivered using both blackboard-based instruction and slides. Seminars and guest lectures by industrial experts.

Assessment methods

Learning outcomes are assessed through a final ora examination aimed at verifying the acquisition of the expected knowledge and skills. The interview will cover the topics addressed during the course.

Students who demonstrate an adequate knowledge of the required topics will pass the examination. Those who show a comprehensive understanding of the subjects and advanced analytical and reasoning skills may achieve the highest grades.

Teaching tools

Lecture notes provided by the instructor and freely available for download through the University's Virtual Learning Environment. Additional materials, including scientific and review articles, will be also provided.
