Learning outcomes

Module A/1 - M-PSI/05 (Community Psychology) - Teacher: Professor Francesca Esposito (26 hours)

By the end of the module, students will: - be familiar with the model of participatory action research as a creative methodology of inquiry/intervention aimed at building complex, situated, and “bottom-up” knowledge, through collaboration with grassroots groups.

 

Modules A/2/1 and A/2/2 - M-PSI/08 (Clinical Psychology) – Teachers: Professor Laura Sirri (13 hours) and Professor Chiara Rafanelli (14 hours)

At the end of the classes the student:

- learns the psychological assessment in relation to the clinical case;

- learn the clinical methodology applied to the clinical case.

Course contents

The course will take place during the first semester (October 2026-January 2027) for the Module A/1 (M-PSI/05 – Community Psychology - Professor Francesca Esposito) and during the second semester (March-May 2027) for the Modules A/2/1 and A/2/2 (M-PSI/08 – Clinical Psychology - Professor Laura Sirri and Professor Chiara Rafanelli).

The Laboratory is for students of the first year of the Second Cycle Degree/Two Year Master in Clinical Psychology.

 

Module A/1 - M-PSI/05 (Community Psychology) - Teacher: Professor Francesca Esposito (26 hours)

The laboratory aims to introduce the foundations of community psychology, adopting a critical perspective inspired by the principles of liberation psychology, and to deepen students’ understanding of Critical Participatory Action Research (CPAR). This model of inquiry will be applied to the drafting (and, where possible, implementation) of a project on a specific theme or context with a clear social justice relevance. In line with the critical approach to participatory action research, the project will involve creative methods of inquiry and collaboration with grassroots groups/collectives engaged in the selected theme or context.

The chosen focus for the laboratory is the intersection of migration, health, power and social justice, with particular reference to the phenomenon of immigration detention and the relationship with local communities.

The proposed activities, which foster active student participation, will enable an understanding of the challenges in applying collaborative forms of research and action directed towards building complex, situated, and “bottom-up” knowledges; as well as invite a reconsideration of the role and functions of community psychologists as agents promoting social change, liberation, and socio-political well-being.

Identification of signs, symptoms and syndromes in clinical psychology. Differential diagnosis. Formulation of diagnostic hypotheses and treatment strategies.

Teaching methods

 The course will include short lectures, small-group work, guided discussions, creative workshops, the collection and analysis of community profiles, the production of documentation and counter-mapping outputs, and the sharing of results with local groups/collectives. The laboratory comprises approximately 20 hours of classroom activities and about 6 hours of fieldwork.

Assessment methods

Module A/1 - M-PSI/05 (Community Psychology) - Teacher: Professor Francesca Esposito (26 hours)

Successful completion will be recognised for students who:

• attend classroom sessions, fieldwork activities, and the final restitution activity with the groups/collectives involved in the participatory action research;
• contribute to the drafting and presentation of a final group report/presentation documenting the experience. Detailed guidelines for the report and presentation will be provided during the course;
• produce an individual reflection on the learning process and outcomes, using a reflective diary that ican also incorporate visuals (reflexive photovoice method).

 

Module A/2/1 - M-PSI/08 (Clinical Psychology) - Teacher: Professor Laura Sirri (13 hours)

Active participation to the activities proposed during classes and full attendance are essential in order to be admitted to the final examination. The final evaluation will consist in a written exam (multiple-choice questions) concerning the topics discussed during classes. The final evaluation will take place during the last class scheduled.

 

Module A/2/2 - M-PSI/08 (Clinical Psychology) - Teacher: Professor Chiara Rafanelli (14 hours)

The final evaluation will consist in a written exam aimed to assess the student's knowledge regarding the topics discussed in class.

 

During the final examination, the use of AI is prohibited. Any use constitutes a violation of academic integrity.
