Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide students with the tools to reach a careful and sensitive representation of the landscape around us. In particular, the theme of landscape and architecture vision will be enhanced through the use of medium and large format cameras

Course contents

The photography laboratory aims to explore in greater depth the issues related to the use of the camera and to understanding its specific technical characteristics.

Activities will take place both in the darkroom (off-camera experimentation, developing and printing) and outdoors, where viewpoints will be identified within the urban context that make it possible to investigate the specific qualities of photography in documenting and surveying the city and its elements.

Teaching methods

During the lectures, slides and films will be shown, alternating between lectures, group activities and practical exercises. The practical work will take place both in the darkroom and in the field, through activities involving observation, image-making and group discussion. Students will present a collective portfolio for the final examination, documenting their photographic experiences and experiments both in the darkroom and outdoors.

Assessment methods

The final examination will consist of a collective discussion of the experiences carried out during the course and of the content of the theoretical lectures given by the instructor, both in the classroom and in the field. The assessment will take into account students’ participation and the experience gained throughout the course, the exercises carried out by the working groups, their knowledge of photographic techniques and the authors discussed during the lectures, as well as the presentation and discussion of the photographs produced and compiled in book form.

AI can be a useful tool to support individual study through further exploration, summaries and self-assessment activities. With regard to the assessment of learning, a limited, declared and non-substantive use of AI is permitted for support activities (summaries, reformulations). Substantive use of AI to complete parts of the assessment is not permitted.

Students with specific learning disorders (SLD) or temporary or permanent disabilities are advised to contact the relevant University office in good time (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/it ). The office will propose any necessary adjustments to the students concerned, which must in any case be submitted, at least 15 days in advance, to the instructor for approval. The instructor will assess their appropriateness, also in relation to the learning objectives of the course.

Teaching tools

The teaching materials presented during the lectures (texts, images, videos, etc.) will be made available in electronic format. Books on the authors presented during the course, as well as original photographic prints, will also be made available.

The equipment provided by the school — cameras, scanners, pinhole cameras, etc. — may be used by students under the supervision of the professor.
