Learning outcomes
The course provides the basics for the analysis of modern power systems/smart grids in steady state and transient/dynamic conditions. At the end of the course, students - know the main technical aspects of electric power transmission networks; - can carry out power flows calculations, fault analysis, assessment of angular, voltage, and frequency stability; - can analyze the electromagnetic transients in the lines.

Module 1 (6 CFU)
- Introduction to electric power systems.
- Power flow analysis.
- Fault analysis.
- Power system dynamics and stability.
- Angular stability.
- Voltage stability.
- Control of active power and frequency. Automatic generation control.
Module 2 (3 CFU)
- Electromagnetic transients.
- Insulation coordination.
- Interaction between electromagnetic transients and electromechanical transients.

Teaching methods
Theoretical lectures and guided programming and simulation activities in the computer lab.
Assessment methods
The exam is a closed-book test on eol.unibo.it with a single overall score. The test includes theory and application calculations to evaluate the candidate's knowledge of and ability to apply the key concepts presented throughout the course (modules 1 and 2). Students may request a final evaluation colloquium to improve their test score.
Students are assessed on their complete knowledge of the course content and its application to solving engineering problems, with marks of excellence. Mnemonic knowledge of the subject matter with limited synthesis and analysis capabilities and difficulty applying it to case studies leads to lower evaluations. Negative assessments or low marks are justified by learning gaps and an inability to apply knowledge to case studies.
