Learning outcomes

The course of Sustainable and Integrated Urban Transit Solutions aims to provide students with methodological, theoretical and empirical skills for planning, design, modelling, simulation and performance evaluation of integrated public transport systems in urban areas, with particular focus on sustainable mobility paradigms.

Course contents

  • Characteristics of public transport systems elements (arcs and nodes): capacity, performances, efficiency
  • Public transport networks supply models: line-based and run-based supply models, stop models.
  • Transit path choice and assignment models: user path choice models, hyperpaths, frequency-based and schedule-based assignment for high-frequency services.
  • Frequency and timetable design methods.
  • Urban transit systems in ITS era: relationship between transport systems and ICT, with special focus on ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems).
  • Environmental performances of public transit systems.
  • Public transport systems integration: physical integration and service integration of transit systems, Mobility as a Service (MaaS) concept, sustainable urban mobility and public transport services integration.
  • Cost Benefit Analysis in public transport systems design and efficiency appraisal.

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons, case studies, seminars and exercises.

Assessment methods

Achievements will be assessed by means of a final written examination (duration 2 hours) consisting of theoretical open-questions and practical exercises. The written examination is closed-book ad aims at evaluating the knowledge of the key concepts of the course through the critical understanding of public transportation systems elements and the ability to cope with design problems
