Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes
The internship experience within the Sociology and Social Research curriculum aims to build and strengthen those meta-competences that are equally necessary for constructing a successful professional path. Through the research activities carried out, and the design and evaluation of intervention activities in targeted organizational contexts, students strengthen their communication skills, develop a goal-oriented operational mindset, foster cooperative synergies within work teams and, through active and proactive participation in organizational processes, gain awareness of the internal organizational and relational dynamics that characterize the workplace (mastery of the alternation between formal and informal registers, hierarchies and procedures, corporate culture and practices, etc.). Finally, the internship experience aims to help students develop a more precise idea of their professional self, turning internship activities into an orientation opportunity capable of activating a self-reflective process on the competences they possess and those still to be strengthened, and of guiding future educational and career choices.
Course contents
The curricular internship takes place in the second year. It lasts 250 actual hours and is worth 10 ECTS credits (CFU). You can carry it out at an external host organization with an active agreement, within the University, or abroad.
Before you start
- Complete the mandatory health and safety training (Module 1 and Module 2). The links are on the "Mandatory health and safety training" page of the Degree Programme website.
- Already completed Module 1 with another institution? You can request recognition: send your certificate to sicurezza.formazione@unibo.it and, once confirmed, forward their email and the certificate to the Internship Office. Module 2 can only be acquired through the University's own training: certificates from other institutions are not valid.
- Prepare an effective application: CV and motivation letter. The University's Job Placement services and workshops can help.
- You cannot carry out your internship at an organization whose legal representative, partner, or senior manager is related to you by kinship or affinity up to the second degree.
- The internship can only start once the internship programme has been signed by all parties and you have downloaded the attendance register.
How to carry out your internship
You have four options.
1. External host organization with an active agreement Browse the offers on SOL – Internship Platform and apply, or submit a spontaneous application to a partner organization of your choice. Have you already agreed on an activity with an organization that has no agreement with the University? The organization can start the agreement procedure and publish an offer dedicated to you. In all cases, you will receive instructions by email to accept the proposal and, after approval by the Internship Committee, to complete the activation and download the attendance register showing the authorized period.
2. University structure (internal internship) You can carry out your internship within the Department of Sociology and Business Law: contact a professor willing to host you and agree together on activities and learning objectives. Then submit your application on SOL – Internships using the "Submit Internship request at Unibo" button. If the internship is part of a project coordinated by a professor, the content and format of the final report are agreed with the supervising professor.
3. Internship abroad You can join a mobility programme (e.g. Erasmus+ Traineeships, thesis-abroad calls) or independently identify a company or organization abroad, following the same procedure as for Italian organizations.
4. Recognition of work activity If you are already working and your job is consistent with your study programme, you can request its recognition in place of the curricular internship. A formal request is required, subject to approval by the Degree Programme Board (see the dedicated section below).
During the internship
- Fill in the attendance register. Activities must take place within the authorized period shown on the register.
- Report any change to the programme (suspension, cancellation) by email to the Internship Office, copying the academic tutor and the company supervisor.
- Report any business trips in advance to the Internship Office and the academic tutor.
- Throughout the internship you are covered by insurance against workplace accidents and for civil liability.
At the end of the internship
Upload to the University internship platform:
- the final report, written according to the template available in the Attachments box on the dedicated page of the Degree Programme website;
- the attendance register, complete with hours and activities, signed by the company tutor and stamped by the host organization;
- also complete the evaluation questionnaire available on the platform.
The host organization's tutor, in turn:
- completes the evaluation questionnaire on the platform;
- writes a final evaluation of the internship activity, in free format, to be attached to the documentation on the platform.
The uploaded documents are checked on the platform. Once the check is complete, register for the exam session on Almaesami to have your pass (idoneità) recorded. Your presence is required on the day of recording: in person or, if unable to attend, via Microsoft Teams on the days and times indicated.
Readings/Bibliography
No textbooks or preparatory readings are required.
However, completing the mandatory safety training (Module 1 – General training and Module 2 – Specific training) is a prerequisite: both modules must be completed before starting any internship activity. Module 2 can only be acquired through the University's own training: certificates from other institutions are not valid.
Teaching methods
The internship lasts 250 hours, is worth 10 ECTS credits (CFU), and takes place at the premises of the host organization or University structure.
For all information on choosing the host organization, submitting the application and the training project, and preliminary requirements (including safety training), see the page dedicated to the curricular internship on the website of the Master's Degree Programme in Sociology and Social Work.
