Learning outcomes
The student will learn the principal spectroscopic and chemical methods for the identification of drugs listed in Eur. Pharmacopoeia
Course contents
The course is composed of lessons and laboratory exercises. Students will be introduced to the theory and application of analytical chemistry methods to identify natural products.
Themes:
- Qualitative and quantitative analytical approaches to the identification of herbalist compounds
- Chemical approaches to functional group determination for the identification of herbalist compounds
- Compound solubility, purity and crystallisation
- Physical constants, including melting point, density, refraction, and polarimetry
- IR and UV spectroscopy
- Chromatography
- TLC applied to herbalist and essence oils

Teaching methods
Theoretical lessons and single-seat laboratory exercises.
Given the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, attendance of this educational activity requires all students (including international students, e.g., ERASMUS) to complete workplace health and safety modules 1, 2, and 3.

Assessment methods
Assessment consists of a final oral examination aimed at evaluating the student's knowledge of the topics covered during the lectures and verifying the acquisition of the knowledge and skills defined by the learning objectives of the course. In particular, students will be assessed on the theoretical and experimental knowledge required for the identification and quality control of the composition of plant-derived active pharmaceutical ingredients.
With regard to the assessment, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is prohibited. Any use of AI during the assessment constitutes a violation of academic integrity.
Practical laboratory activities must be documented in a laboratory notebook, the contents of which will be evaluated during the final oral examination. For the preparation of the laboratory notebook, a limited, declared, and non-substantive use of AI is permitted for support activities such as summarization and rephrasing.
