Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will know the basic principles and techniques of programming, and will be able to create programs in a specific programming language.
Course contents
The course mainly covers the imperative programming paradigm, using the Java language. The topics covered are as follows:
- Introduction to programming and to the Java language
- Variables, types, operators, expressions
- Selection constructs
- Iteration constructs
- Arrays and matrices
- Procedural programming
- Recursion
- File reading and writing

The book mainly used for the development of this course is:
W. Savitch, Programmazione di base e avanzata con Java, Pearson Italia S.p.A., 2024.
Purchasing the book is not necessary to attend the course or to take the exam.
Teaching methods
The teaching material is presented through slides and code examples.
The course also includes in-class exercises on the topics covered during the lectures, conducted both by the instructors and by the course tutor. If possible, optional exercise sessions with the tutor will also be organized outside class hours.
All teaching material will be made available on the course’s Virtuale platform.
Assessment methods
The exam covers all topics addressed in the course and consists of designing and writing Java code.
It takes place in the laboratory, without the use of manuals, personal notes, or electronic devices of any kind. With regard to the assessment of learning, the use of AI is prohibited. Any use of AI constitutes a violation of academic integrity.
The duration of the exam depends on the number of exercises assigned, considering a minimum of 30 minutes per exercise and a maximum overall duration of three hours.
The laboratory test is assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
- Syntactic correctness: the code must compile; exercises that do not compile will not be taken into consideration.
- Semantic correctness: the code must correctly perform what is required by the assignment.
- Pragmatics: the code must be clean, readable, non-redundant, and as efficient as possible.
Students who obtain a grade of 27 or higher in the laboratory test must take an additional oral examination, aimed at confirming, modifying, or increasing the grade obtained.
The oral examination will consist of carrying out exercises, including partially, discussing the proposed solutions, and exploring related topics in greater depth.
In order to prevent cases of plagiarism, the instructors reserve the right to require an oral examination also for students with a grade lower than 27, or to administer the exam in written form on paper rather than in the laboratory.
Six exam sessions per year are guaranteed. Students with Specific Learning Disorders (DSA) or temporary or permanent disabilities are advised to contact the relevant University office in good time (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/it ); the office will propose any possible accommodations to the students concerned, which must in any case be submitted, 15 days in advance, for approval by the instructor, who will assess their appropriateness also in relation to the learning objectives of the course.

GNU/Linux Ercolani Laboratory:
52 desktop PCs for students with Internet access
45 workstations for students’ laptops.

The Debian operating system is installed on all workstations.
The machines are equipped with Intel Core i5-4590 processors at 3.30 GHz and 8 GB of RAM. The PCs can be used remotely 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
This laboratory is subject to access control; therefore, access is allowed only through the use of the student badge, issued by the Student Administration Office of the School of Science (via Zamboni 33). After the badge has been issued, it may take a few days to obtain access authorization.
Access to the Ercolani laboratory requires all students to have previously completed modules 1 and 2 of the safety training for study environments, in e-learning mode.
